I have a 1986 FLTC with a bad ignition switch which harley davidson no longer stocks. I also looked at aftermarket switchs and have not found any that would fit. Has anyone else had this trouble? If so what did you do.
I've been picking up spare parts for my '90 Ultra off ebay for awhile. Thats about the only place you can find some of these obsolete parts for out bikes. One thing, if I remember correctly you can disassemble that style of ignition switchand clean up the contacts. There really isnt much that can go wrong with them other than corrosion. I believe it's the same switch from 1980 fLT's up to and including '92 FLT/FLHT's.
They a a little hard to find, even on fleabay. If it's an electrical deficiency, some of us have added relays under the seat and use the switch only to activate them. If it's a mechanical problem with the fork lock, that can be addressed most often. If it's totally shot, you'll need to find one. It takes some time to remove them also. The older (and newer model) rotary type switches are servicable, but not this type.
It is possible to back feed the ign mod Find the pos wire to the ign mod ( look in the service manual ) I've installed a toggle switch on a guys 94 bagger to keep him on the road until he got a switch and that was 15 years ago
Well since I have an '86 FLHTC I will subscibe to see if issue effect me also.
To date guys, I have not have electrical issue with my '86 (stage one) which boggles my mind, except my spot switch burning-up. 4 bux for a new one, abit different but who can see it + it got an l.e.d. on the toggle.
the switch acts like it is locked, but i can push up and back from the bottom side and turn it on. i have not tried to lock it since it started this happened.

Paul, it's been too long since I had mine apart and didn't look closely at the last one since I was doing away with it alltogether. I can't remember if that spring load is in the switch body or the **** (think it's the ****). I'll take mine apart before the weekend is out and try to get you a better idea whether it's servicable, well, shade-treeable
Does it lockup with you only in the "lock" position (forget the key position) or does it lockup between "off" and "run" and/or "lights" positions?
