Default Stator?

Ok last fall my 87 FLHTC with 32 amp alt was over charging. I checked the stator per fac shop manual it was putting out, I did all three test in manual. Over the Winter I picked up a HD regulator. I put it on and It was fine for a few miles. It stopped charging. Went back home re checked everything. I even put the old regulator back on still no charging. Now the AC output test stays 17-19 volts no matter what RPM. So It looks like the Stator. Should I replace both the Rotor and Stator or can I get away with just the Stator? Thanks Bob

unless the magnets have come off..no need to replace the rotor. just replacing the stator is all you should need..

Thank you. I guess all I have to do now is pull it apart.

If your bike has the original rotor and depending on mileage.....I might would consider replacing the rotor anyway. Even though the rotor may not have any issues.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to consider upgrading the charging system as well.

I hear what you are saying about the rotor. My voltage reg is new so I am just going to stay with the 32 amp. Its worked fine for me for almost 20 years. I don't have any extra lights. I was just thinking about the rotor today. HD wants $119 for the stator. Iam thinking of going with an aftermarket rotor/stator. Just not sure which one to buy. I cant bitch about the HD set up. It lasted 19 years with one voltage regulator. I put it in in the Summer of 91.

Stock OEM rotor/stator are just fine. Very good quality indeed and they work. I've never had any problems with their quality.

I've also had good luck with Cycle Electric as well. Their stuff is very comparable to stock and are just as good or better.

Accel use to make pretty good electrical items.....however, it seems their quality has gone downhill in the past few years. For the time being at least, I would avoid them unless you got a pretty sweet deal on it. I had an accel stator on my Dyna and it didn't last a year!! Others here may say they are fine....just my experience with them.

87 was a 22 amp system from the factory, maybe that was a typo in the first post or it has already been upgraded to 32 amp?

The later and aftermarket rotors had splines for the shaft, the original 87's did not. However they won't slip unless the compensator nut gets way loose. You'll find the quality aftermarket stators (Cycle Electric, Compufire) are priced with or above OEM, which is high quality as well. Also, the 22 amp had smaller windings on the stator which allows them to charge a bit better than the 32 at low rpms.

If it's still 22 amp, you can buy an OEM upgrade kit including stator, rotor, regulator for about 200.00 (from discounting sources) Part# 29985-87 ...

32 amp has large connector pins 22 amp has tiny pins

Accurate info.

The OEM stator is indeed a very good unit, and the plug is especially good. It resists leaking and "swelling up" really well.
The only issue with the rotor would be wear and tear, not lack of function. They can tend to wear around the spline area, and sometimes the magnets do come loose, though not a major issue.

I do not see the need for an upgrade though. 32 is more than enough for most.

Just take care. Not every post is accurate like evorider, so do not be so quick to decide.

I do have the 32 amp. I will probably go with a stock or better. I have heard bad things about Accel, not only here but from other riders I know. I saw some on Ebay for 34.00 but I have no idea if they are any good. I will decide on a rotor when I get it apart. I am not working right now so I would like to save some money. Iam not going to be foolish and buy crap parts and have to do it over. Thank you everyone for help and advise.

I know I'm probably to late for this thread but is it worth it to upgrade to the three phase stator?
