I would also tend to go with a '96 or later. I'm finding parts are harder to come by for '95 and earlier. I love my '94 because it doesn't look like all the others but I pay for it when things stop working. I was lucky and found a complete new cruise kit on Craigslist. Parts are out there, you just have to look a lot harder.

You just can't beat these old evos. I'm owned four over the years and loved 'em all. They're dependable, easy to work on, and run forever. I've never had any major motor or tranny problems with any of them. If you're going to be riding two up for any distance, I would definetly consider an electraglide. I always thought of them as "old man" bikes, but now that I own one, I wouldn't trade it for the world. The tour pack, stereo, cruise control. Can't imagine taking a trip without those three things now, and believe me, your passenger will be so much more comfortable. Good luck.

We're definitely leaning this way!

I was in the same boat you are in and decided I would get a 98 EVO. This was the last production year before HD switched to the twin cam motors. I figure that the 98 "should" have had pretty much all the improvements learned from previous years. I picked up a garage queen RKC that had only 2,500 miles on it and looked like it just came off the showroom floor.
