Guys I have the list of things needed to convert from the efi system to a carb, but my question is, do I use the same ecm? or is it even necessary?
This might be a dumb, question, because I trying to simplify the system so I'm guessing there is no futher use for the ecm? Thanks
The easiest way to do it, without the discontinued interconnect harness, is to buy a good single fire ignition system, On the bike i just did, we discarded the stock ecm and left the harness hang there, Its very easy, most people including myself was over thinking how difficult it was going to be, its simple, dont be afraid to tackle the job.
Gsxr, thanks I saw on the list that there was an electronic ignition on it, so I assumed it would replace the ecm, but I wanted to ask about the ecm so I didn't have any surprises when I startes the process, what did you use for a carb, have a friend with a used mukuni 45 that I'm going to pick up, how have you like the conversion?
I did this exact conversion about a year ago to my '96 FLHTCI.
The early EFI systems ('95-'96) used a ECM that was separate from all the other 'systems' on the bike so, yes, you can remove it and the wiring harness. That's the route I went...stripped everything off.
I went with a Crane Hi-4 single fire ignition system and S&S Super E. You have to get the -81 (dash 81) or 83 part number for the ignition rotor. The most difficult aspect of this conversion for me was getting all the fuel pump plumbing out of the gas tank. Later I did get a '94 tank from a RK but haven't put it on yet.
Idaho, so after the install and you start the bike it will flash error code #81? so are you recommending that I install an ignition rotor so it won't flash #81?
and what ended up getting the fual pump going?

Sorry Phat, I should have given more details.
Since I completely removed the ECM and related components, I get no error codes upon start up. (the only thing left is the KPS, Crank position sensor, because I didn't have the time/patience)
I removed the fuel pump and all plumbing within the tank, converting it to a "carb tank". Pingel makes a kit that plugs the return bung on the tank and adapts the supply bung to a <shocker> Pingel petcock.
You cannot use the EFI ignition rotor with any other system. The instructions that came with Hi-4 have the correct part number. It's a very common part, or it was back in the day.
I know there are some differences between the RK's and the EG's....I would study the schematics in your FSM if you have one. Let me know if you don't and maybe I can help you out.
Phat, I'm in the middle of the conversion myself, nothing wrong with my M&M, getting close to it's ability to feed my recent engine additions.
Remove the ecm and harness, serious amount of room freed up, also take a look at the Ultima 2000i complete ignition system (coil, wires, rotor, adjustable module) ranges from $145 to $158 and will need only one ignition wire to feed the system and a remote tach wire comes out of the sensor.
The tank is the hardest part but can be done with some patience

the mik 45 will be a big large for that 80 incher, i used a stock style cv and a stock intake, Reason being, i used the stock cv, is they are fairly easy to tune, and can be picked up very cheap, all in all, about 300 bux to do the swap. chad.
Gsxr, love the sound of the $300 hundred bucks part, thanks for the info on the M 45, going to start putting together my parts for the tear down and conversion.
97 bagger hope you don't mind if I don't pick up the ecm, thanks for the offer.
