ok, got a question for experienced wrenches, I have a 1998 flht, with 02 fork legs and newer style brakes, I just bought a bolt in wheel for a 02 ultra classic which has the stock sealed bearings. After measuring, The width between the two outer wheel bearings if measuring thru the axle hole, is wider on the 02 wheel than the 98, so that means i have to make my own spacer, My question is, i want to keep the wheel centered in the forks, so thats means, some how i have to narrow the cable operated speedometer drive? how do i do that...lol ??????
yea, ill do that, I intentionally retained the sealed 3/4 bearings so I could retain the stock drive and axle, my problem being that with a sealed bearing and no seal, they have widened the width from bearing face to bearing face, only a small but, but it is offically causing me problems...lol.. ill figure it out.. thanks
Obviously, you'll have to take the difference off each side by working it down equally. I guess '02 is an electric speedo so there's no replacing the drive?
Those things do wear out after miles. You can only polish and reverse the spacer so many times until the seal won't do a good job and all you can do for the drive is polish and set the seal in different spot, but that's very limited. Mine's leaking on both sides just enough to make coming to a slow stop like riding a hobby horse. Got a new drive and spacer, just waiting on bearing service time to replace them

I can make stainless spacers in both 3/4" and 1". I have the material at the shop, just need to know the widths if it'll help. Prolly going to take about an hour to make, bevel and polish them.
I took a hack saw and cut my speedo-unit down to 7/8". that put the 07 wheels on my 99 in the center. same as with my 95 with road king wheels and my 90 with 07 sg wheels. or u could use a lathe as already mentioned. i marked the unit all the way around and then cut with saw all the way around until through. then finished with a smooth file . works great.
Let me make sure I am following here......the one inch axle will fit through the speedo unit? All I need to do is shave 7/8" off the sides of the unit? After this is done, the speedo-unit will work on a one inch axle with the 2000+ wheels?
Thanks
I wouldnt use a lathe and sure as Hell wouldnt use a hack saw to shorten the speedo drive, I would use a mill, Clamp the drive to the table, mill the required amount off half the inner spacer then rotate 90* and finish the other side.
