So my dad bought this brand new back in 1986. It has 40832 miles, it had a motor rebuild a few years ago and at that time they put in ev2 cams, shaved the heads 0.050, street port, put in solid lifters, adj pushrods, screaming eagle revtec, and tuned the s&s super e shortie carb. he said that it had a stutter a 65-70 miles an hour. well it has only had 1000 miles tops since the rebuild. he has pretty bad rheumatoid arthritis. Well its under control now and we are gonna try to pound some miles out this year. now to the problems....
-this thing is nasty, what is the best cleaning agent for the whole bike? simple green?
-it is puking oil out of the breather I mean what the hell? is there a common problem a fix i should look at?
i want to fix the oil leak, then tune the stutter out and finally clean and polish the **** outta it for him, he really does not know that i have it. I snuck it out. I must work pretty fast so he doesn't find it missing before its done. i also plan to change all the fluids, plugs, plug wires, drain and refill the tank, new riser bushings, and change all the rubber hoses. it has new tires, and brakes anything that I am missing???? thanks guys.
If it's really greasy and especially if it's been that way a while, spray all the nasty with WD40 and let it soak in, then spray it again until all the grime stays shiny. Then Simple Green or any similar cleaner and use hot water from the water heater thru a hose, if possible. Most common reason for one to puke out the breathers is being overfilled with oil, and just sitting a long while will make it do it temporarily. Can't help you with the S&S but there are some on here who might and the only manual worth having is the Official Factory Service Manual avaliable from a dealer. It won't help with all the modified pieces, but neither will any other manual and it's the only one that gives correct and specific information.
Just saw the photos. I thought you said it was dirty???
I would guess it is puking oil out because it has been setting, and oil has seeped by the check valve in to the crankcase. It should quit after it is run a while, and the oil is scavanged back to the oil tank.
If it has been sitting for a while, check the battery and electrics, I would also put some sea foam thru the tank.
Will it start? If you can, add some sea foam to the oil before you drain it, get her nice and hot then drain the oil. The sea foam will help dislodge any sludge that has settled. Instructions are on the can for quantities etc.
wellll i guess its dirty to me, but I got a 09 street bob and it stays pretty clean. ya it started and ran not the best above idle/slight throttle, but it did run, backfire some, cough some, ect. I did put a new battery in it already, its a interstate. Man is this thing loud. but I picked up some simple green, and some 2000 grit wet sand paper, polish, rags, and matte black paint, gonna paint whats to bad to polish and clean the hell outta the rest, i am hoping to get it tip top by the end of the weekend. I really wanna ditch the drag pipes, turn signals, sissy bar, two up seat, and come to some taller drag bars! but sadly its not mine......yet.......
Pull the float bowl off the carb. Remove the 2 jets (main and intermediate) and soak them in some carb cleaner, blow out. If they are really gummed up, you may need to very gently push a very small wire through them, even though EVERYTHING says to not do that. I have also cleaned them out with some thread. The S&S carb seems to be prone to gumming up if it sits. After it is all clean, if it still hesitates at highway speed, try going up one size main jet. If no change, then swap it back and go up one size intermediate jet. At that speed, you could be running on either or both jets, I think.
As others have mentioned, they pretty much all will puke oil out the breather if they sit long enough. And get the factory service manual. And I thought you said it was dirty?
As far as the cleaning goes, I use a product by Purple Slice called "wet wet". Comes in a spray can and makes all the black components look like new (That grey dash is actually black!) I love the stuff-spray it on and forget about it-its done! Hope this helps....
