I am thinking of getting a "backup" bike for my '48 pan, for long road trips, etc. Don't know much about the "newer" models. Is a 85 Evo a decent model year? I know sometimes the first yr or 2 of a new product there may be problems that get worked out in later years. Friend's uncle has a '85 Electraglide with 22,000 miles he wants to sell for $9500. Also think the price may be a little high. Any insight would be appreciated!

Price is way high. I tried to sell my 88 FLHTC that only has 12,000 miles on the motor for 7 grand and had zero interest! You could probably get a 2000 fo around 10K.
the list price for a 1985 flhtc was $8995. i got mine for $8495. 85's have been known to break valve springs and the front drive pulley is also a known weak spot. my 85 hasn't had anything done to the motor except replaced a valve spring. when the spring broke it took out the breather gear so that was replaced too, under warranty.
i just wanted to add, i wouldn't trade my 85 for anything else. they are extremely rare. the total production run for electra glides that year was less than 3500 and less than 35,000 bikes for all models including sportsters, softtails, fl and fx models.
Bagga,
Are you serious about less that 3500 1985 FLHTC's produced? I have a 1985 FLHTC that I boought used back in 1992 and it has held up well for me. I've had to have some top end work done and replaced a final drive belt but other than that and minor things the bike runs well. The odometer shows 87K miles on mine but I've ran around without a speedo cable as well. i also updated the clutch/ tranny to use the ball and ramp set-up. Also any clue how many of what colors were produced?

Yep, everything with HD is rare. I have a 99 Fxstc. It was the last year of that model with the last year of the evolution engine. Jus' sayin'.
