FLHR Ignition Module
My '91 FLHR started cutting out Saturday afternoon, but when I went home that night it ran fine. Then Sunday it did it again and wouldn't restart. I had to trailer it home and now it starts and runs for no more than five seconds then shuts off. It's getting fuel and the plugs didn't look too bad, they had spark. I did a search of the forums and saw that people had problems with the ignition modules getting hot. What do you guys think? If this is my problem what brand do you recommend? Thanks guys.
It could be the coil too. If it is heat related you can spray the coil or the ignition module with an upside-down can of compressed air while you are having the problem and see if the bike will start. When you turn the can upside down in will spray freezing cold.
My 89 did the same thing this season.
The manual said to check the plugs, wires and coil first , then go to test the iginition pickup and the module.
I am no electrical wizard, I just followed the book and went with replacing the plugs, wires and coil first. My plugs had 15k on them and they were worn, the wires and coil were the stock original ones.
I followed all the wires and the termination points while I was there and cleaned all the related connectors. Put it all back together and it runs like a champ.
For the module and the pickup , I'd go with OEM before replacing everytthing with an after market setup...
