The Factory radio Harley used in the 1986 -1988 models had the two studs with the rectangular box in the center, like the older radio with the volume stud on the left and the tuning stud on the right. The DIN is the radio that is entirely in the full rectangular box. No studs or side holes. The Harley radio looked like it was a DIN type of a slip in radio. The front panel plugged in and covered the studs. The cassette opening was in the center of the panel.
Cut out the fairing opening to make it fit your DIN mounting system. Just takes some time with a Dremmel brand Moto Tool. You have to pull the outer fairing off to get in there for the electrical stuff, so that's a good starting point.
Hey gnafin.... I can walk you thru the mounting of it and i have some of the pieces to do it. You alter the original bracket for behind the fairing, buy an new rubber nosecone and weather cover (still available thru HD) and madify the rear bracket to support the radio if you have to, my radio plug hit it in the rear. I can have the guy modify the plate to be like mine if you like... if you have a wirefeed you can do it. Let me know, I will hold off sending the signal cancell till I hear.
I have a inner fairing from my 91 I would sale cheap still has radio and gauges in it. The wiring harness except for the radio was ate by mice . I could get some pictures and e-mail them if you like.
