My buddy has an 87 fxrc the seat flips up in the front half, he's been trying to find a Sundowner or similar quality for the bike but doesn't seem to be much available for that year. He thinks they only made this type frame from 85 - 90. Any FXR guys come across this issue where they can't get a two piece seat and had to modify a one piece so it would fit?

I don't think they ever changed the FXR frame other than different rakes, 29 and 31. So any seat for any FXR should fit.

 

Try to get a stock '86 FXRD seat. It was also an optional "touring"seat for FXRs through the '90s. It's a two piece seat and will bolt right on. It's one of the most comfortable seat I've ever sat on.
