Alright. Lately I've been noticing a plinking sound while riding. In the first place, I thought it was likely detonation, but upon second thought, I'm not so sure.
I started the bike yesterday, and while in the driveway idling, I don't hear anything abnormal. Took it down to the end of the street and back, and I was hearing the plinking sound (plink.......plinkplink.....plink....plink). It sounded to ME like I could hear it more from the primary side of the bike.
On top of that, I've had the bike make a crunching sound twice (not good, I know...) The first time, I was starting the bike. Starter engaged, turned the engine, then CRUNCH! I let off the starter and said oh crap. Hit the starter again - no noise, started right up. It made the same crunch sound as I was pulling up to a stop sign on the way home.
After thinking about it, and noticing that the sound seemed to be more noticeable from the primary side, I'm thinking now that I might have broken a tooth off of a sprocket in the primary, and the tooth is rattling around in there. The crunching probably when the tooth gets wedged between the chain and the sprocket.
The bike's sitting now until I get 'er fixed, and the first chance I get, I'm taking the primary cover off to see if there is anything abnormal in there.
Anyone else have any other suggestions where to look if it turns out there's nothing obvious there?

Hi,I doubt very much if it will be a tooth from the sprocket as these are made of pretty strong stuff. More likely to be a problem with the Starter Jackshaft Assembly. Maybe Pinion Gear damage or Jackshaft Bolt loose. Could be other things but I would definitely be pulling the Primary Cover off to inspect. If you have heard rattling/plinking make sure you keep & inspect the oil for debris, when draining. If you find debris it would be probably be a good idea to have a real good look for other bits of debris within the Clutch Assemby even Rotor/Alternator Assembly, as any debris could work its way to any part of the Primary side and not finding it,then rebuilding, could be costly.Im sure you will get a good & prompt response from people a lot more knowledgeable than me but I hope this is something to consider. Bungo..
Don't know about all the rest, but if a broken tooth got caught between the chain and sprocket you'd be stopped dead cold. Not sure what it might be. Seems highly unlikely you'd pick up a broken tooth anyway. Other parts are engineered to fail before the sprockets or chain if kept in adjustment.
Had the same noise happen to me. Went to start and heard strange sorta crunch sound. The primary adjuster shoe shattered. Cheap part and real easy repair.
What really sucked was we were getting ready to go on a bike run. They went right past my house and I could only watch.
I've only had the bike since March. Haven't really done anything to it other than change the fluids and the rear tire. I'm planning on taking the primary cover off Saturday and seeing what I can see.
