Have just taken Front Eng. Mount off the old Ultra. Already had bought a replacement @ $28.99,which is "made to the same standard and quality as the original" but "not foreign junk". The original badly rusted bolt that came off is 3/8"dia. The original hole in the Mount is 1/2"dia. This leaves 1/8" for movement & water penetration. I am sure Harley have modified the Mounting to 1/2" dia.at some point and been left with the old 3/8" Bolts which they conveniently, for them, stuck them in to the new & larger dia. mountings. Point is....this Ultra cost approx.Ł10k+ in 1991.
A bit sad really that they took shortcuts like this and I wonder if that is why they have struggled in recent years as a company, customers losing faith etc.
I didnt buy the bike when new and struggled to buy it a couple of years ago so I am in at the lower end. If I ever come into money....I wonder if its these little things that will decide whether to buy Harley again or not.
Are they still cutting corners with the new Hardleys.??
What do you guys over in the US of A think?? Bungo

Bill,
There was a recent post about this buddy. The smaller bolt allows movement for the purpose of alignment. It only holds the front mount down, so basically there is no major load on it. Putting a 1/2" bolt in it could cause alignment problems. You should check out the alignment as per the shop manual whenever you do anything with the mounts. Hope this helps.
