Hey all! I've took out my points and putting in electronic ignition. I am still trying to set it so the bike will start. My bike is a kicker and it tried to launch me over my house. I did everything the instuctions said. I pulled the plugs and the plug for the flywheel found TDC then turned ignition so that the light just comes on. So why wont it start? I have one more question. I dont have VOES on my Evo. Should I have them? I hope these aren't dumb questions but I'm learning lots. Thanks all for taking time to read this.

What kind of electronic ignition unit do you have? Are you getting spark at the plugs on the kick? Some EI units have a switch that you can set for kick start, so they fire the plugs on the first revolution, and some don't "support" kick start at all. If it is set for electric start, or if it doesn't support kick start, it won't fire the plugs until the second or even third rev - which would seem to make it impossible to kick start. I think this is to try to avoid backfiring through the carb, but I really don't know for sure.
I'll leave the VOES for others to comment on... except to say that if your bike didn't come with one from the factory, then it probably isn't needed. I've probably said more than I should have about the VOES already! There's a recent VOES thread on this forum that you look at...

Ditto...most electronic ignitions do not support kick start...if yours does not have a switch on it for kick start it probably doesn't. The reason for it not firing till the second revolution is to keep the motor from kicking back...makes the starter last longer. You can check by removing the plugs...rotate the engine with the kicker by hand and see if you get spark the first time the engine comes to top dead center on the compression stroke.
oh yah. I told the dealership i had kickstart. No there isn't a switch for kickstart on it either. I did have it running but only on 1 cylinder. Just a lucky kick maybe. I'll be on the phone with them in the morning. Thanks alot guys, appreciate it

If it tried to launch you over the house then the timing is too advanced. Are you sure you have the right mark on the flywheel? I would gradually dial the timing back a few degrees at a time till it starts.
I stuck a clean screwdriver in the sparkplug hole and I did have the right marks for TDC. I got it running took it for a rip, it run alright still sputters when I crack it open, same as when I had the points in. Dyna tech emailed me and said I need to purchase a harness to hook to the computer to reset the dead revs from 0 to 1. Oh and did I add they want a hundred bucks to buy it. I will keep tweaking away. Thanks to all of you for helping me.
