Peering across the Atlantic I would guess somewhere like Williamston?
Not a bad guess! I am about 40 miles Southwest-- between Greenville and Goldsboro. I don't use a name since the WHOLE county has 16,000 people and 6 traffic lights. That's right--in a 15 mile radius of my house there are 6 lights total. There is the reason for my "General location".
I do agree with the OP. I just don't understand why the big secret.

I reckoned West is Hanging Rock and East is looking out over Pamlico Sound or one of the nearby river estuaries - makes it difficult to get closer from this distance!

Well-I am impressed by your eyesight! That is the Pamlico Sound. (Sounds like you been "round these parts" before--military?)
The mountains are a variety of places in the Smokeys. It is not everyday you can ride from the coast to the twisties on the same day.
