The plate has a 7 on it, do you know if it was 2007 or 1997 ?? Looks like it just needs some TLC, along with a few fresh parts. Should be a good ride once you get all the "Storage bugs" out of it.
There are 'weak points' on early evos, but after all this time they may all have been fixed! If as John suggests its a late evo they are pretty solid. I think we need to know more about your 'new' bike to give you a better answer. It may be heavily modified inside, have a high mileage, be bone stock.... Give us a few more clues!
I look forward to seeing more pics when you have cleaned it up and given it a hug!
I don't know of any issues with S&S motors. They pretty much fixed every thing that Harley had trouble with including putting in a Torrington cam brg.. My son has a 113 S&S motor in his built bike, and even though it has compression realeases, it still needed a geared down starter. It also needed a beefed up clutch.
This has a 1998 96" S&S motor in it. I hear they were pretty solid but I would like to fix any "issues" that year EVO had... It will be kinda nice going back to a carb and picking up that "take a trip" "take a trip" idle I used to get with my Shovel.

If it is an S&S motor, it won't have any 'evo' issues! It ain't an evo in the strictest sense. Any tales you read on here about things like cam bearings do not apply to your motor, as it has no Harley parts in it. It may have S&S issues, but as a fellow S&S owner I haven't come across any yet. The primary and transmission are not troublesome, so unless you can see or come across things that don't seem quite right try to get it running!
Your bike looks quite dirty, so has it been stored for a long time? If so replace all fluids and give it a thorough service, strip and clean the carb. Replace tyres if they are several years old, plus all rubber hoses, and give it a gentle ride out.
There is plenty of expertise on this forum to deal with any problems you may find.
