GREAT testing info shown in the referenced thread BB4xl.....

you guys that have replaced the stator..did you JUST replace the stator or did you do the regulator/rectifier as well?

I'm a cheapskate and don't want to spend more coin then needed

Put the exact same volt meter on my '91 FLHS right next to my "toaster" console wired into the "load" side of my "lights" circuit breaker. Sticky taped/tie wrapped it to my handlebars. The progressive LED's go from red/bad to green/good and tell me exactly what the votlage is at my weakest point in the electrical system at different rpms. I'm running high output halogens for headlight 90/100w; spots 55w each; halogen turn signals, and rear brake light so this volt meter is very good for letting me know exactly what's going on with my charging system.

P.S. always change the voltage regulator when you do the stator. Are you sure it was the stator? Did you test everything; battery, stator, and regulator? I go through a regulator about every 10k miles and have the original stator. Also "rubber mounting" the regulator can extend it's life.

yeah I got home early this AM and dont have to deliver in NJ untill tuesday so I had a bit of time to pull it apart todaay....

it's DEFIANTLY the stator....

there is 2 burnt "lugs" on it...

the rotor looks real good yet so that's a plus.....

since I dont know for sure what cooked the stator I believe I will "bite the bullet" and replace the regulator/rectifier as well

the indy I use is closed on mondays so I wont be able to put it back together untill later on in the week sometime.....(depends on where I go in the truck this week too)

I recommend using Genuine H.D. electrical components like the stator and regulator. Pay a little more now and you won't have to do it again. Or buy the aftermarket stuff and do it again in 2 years. Your choice.

The good doctor makes an excellent point when I consider that my '91 FLHS has it's original stator and since the voltage regulator went out about 8 yrs. ago after 12 yrs. I replace it about every 10K miles. Next one gets replaced with an OEM!

I have only put 3 Hd regulators on in 84,000 miles. I am on my second stator. Actually third stator. There was nothing wrong with the 22 amp I took off to do the 32 amp upgrade. I did put a new one on with the last stator. Reused the rotor.

my 72 flh has an alt light,01 has a guage...i cant belive they left it out in 90..

the accel stator is warrantied for life..........

those and the regulators are both "made in USA" and I've had good luck with their products before...

I appreciate your input but I think I'll give them a shot

I found it hard to believe as well at first but apparently none of them had one and hooking up an "idiot" like to an alternator is more involved than meets the eye........

I was hoping for something simple like a single bulb and diode on my sporty but it looks to be either an actual voltmeter (like the aftermarket one mentioned several posts ago) or nothing

When I did my stator last spring. I asked on here what people thought about Accell parts. I knew of some problems with their Volt regulators. My Bro-inlaw goes thry them all the time on his Shovelhead. Keeps buying them because they are cheap. Not many people had good thing to say about Accel. I also talked with a local Indy shop that has a good rep and I have known them for years. The owner told me to stay away from Acell stators. Said they don't last. Life time or not, who wants to take it a part again? What is the price difference? I got my HD parts thru Zanotti's on line. Lake shore also sells online. Both are less than the dealer. A voltage regualtor is one thing to change, but a stator is a time consuming PITA. My HD 32 amp Stator lasted almost 19 years on a bagger w/ligths and radio. That was with one regulator. I ride a lot at night too. This is just my opinion, but everytime I cheap out I end up paying for it later. Good Luck. I guess Zanotti's web site parts page isn't working. It says call.

If you have a fairing, you get a gauge....Even since the start of the EVO motors, there hasn't been a charging system light on non-fairing bikes.
