I put the 32 amp Harley upgrade kit in my 1985 FLHT. On my 1989 Ultra, I put the 38 amp kit that Harley had in it. The kit fit with no problems and it gave me a lot of power for extra lights and accessories.
Your 85 probably has a 22 amp system if its stock. You could just replace the stator with the same size. Or you could upgrade to a 32 amp. Then you need everything. Rotor, stator and regulator. I just replace my stator last summer. I had upgraded to a 32 amp system 18 years ago. I went with HD parts. I went with the same rotor and replaced the stator. If you are not running anything extra ( SpotLights, radio, etc) the 22 amp is probably fine.
Go to www.compufire.com and buy their upgrade. This will end all you electrical problems, it will also increase your fuel mileage.
When the battery reaches full charge with the HD system the regulator then sends the excess electricity to ground, so the charging system is still charging. When the Comp-U-Fire systems reaches full charge it shuts the system down there by reducing the load on the engine and increasing your mileage by 5mi or more.
I know this is true because that is what happened when I put their system on my wife's bike. Also with the new batteries you will need a modern electrical system.

How hard is it to get parts in Australia? That might be the only problem going with non stock parts.

From what I know, it is a very backward country, and the kangaroos have gone feral, and taken over, meaning everyone lives behind electrified fences, and can only venture out for parts before dusk.
