Default crazy question...i think

hey folks,

i got a 1991 springer with the solid disk rear wheel

the issue i'm facing is the rear pulley.... i swapped the rear wheel for a 2000 40 spoke...
...i was told that i could do this, but would simply need to use a 2000 belt pulley (which is narrower) so i would have to change the belt...no problem, i'm mechanically inclined

anyway, the way the belt pulley seats to the hub on the 1991 is different than the way the 2000 pulley seats on the hub...although both line up to the 5 bolt holes, there's a difference:

the 1991 has a much thinner hub hole....looks maybe 3/16 thick where the bolts attach to the hub, which obviously require shorter bolts

the 2000 has a much thicker hub hole....measures about 7/8 thick where the bolts attach to the hub, which obviously require longer bolt holes

...am i gonna run into any problems trailing this rear wheel?

that is, because of the width of things

i hope i'm explaining things correctly

help!

Anytime you change wheels or pulleys, you need to check alignment. You do this by centering the wheel, then use a straight edge against both the front and rear pulley to ensure they are properly aligned. Hope this helps!!

You can use the 2000 wheel on the 91 but you will have to line it up. Custom spacers are almost a given. First line up the wheel in the center of the frame. I use 3/4 washers as temporary spacers and a string to sight the wheel in center. Once you get it where you want it...measure the washers and get a spacer that size.

Once the wheel is centered in the frame, you need to use a string or straight edge to see if pulleys are lined up. You cannot use the 91 pulley on the 00 wheel or vice versa without an adapter. You can get wheel, pulley spacers and adapters here Pulley alignment is more important than having the wheel in the center of the frame...Harley offsets the rear wheel all the time.
