Default '89 FLHTC Pannier Question.

Hi all,

Was wondering, can i put a later style pannier on my '89 flhtc? Reason i ask is, i fancy the hinged lid instead of the lift one.

Thanks in advance,
Gee.

Not without some fabrication work,

The saddlebag will work on the primary side of the bike, you'll have to space it out further away from the rear fender so that it can open all the way without interferance.

For the cam side of the bike, there is more work to do. You'd have to fab a battery tray under the seat, it would have to hold a much smaller battery and you'd need to redo the battery cables. The side cover would need to go and you'd need to find a side cover from a 93- 96 and modify it (cut hole in it) so it could work with the side mounted oil tank. The saddlebag support bracket incorporates the existing battery tray and you'd have to do some metal work to clean it up significantly and make it work.

Wish it was easier to do the swap, but the frame changes for 93 and up really make it a custom job to get those bags to work and look clean on an older glide.

Someone on HDF has done it. I seem to recall he used their original side covers, but trimmed the right-hand one to fit up to the new pannier. Worth a search, to find the thread.
