Just finished top end re-build on a 1986 FLSTC, re hone, rings, valve grind and gaskets to cure bottom gasket leak. Also fitted an EV 27 cam. Using an S&S super E.
1. Done about 100 miles or so under average speed conditions and while idling, (ticking over for us Europeans!!!) she seems to smoke a small bit, but NOT when revving or running. Is this normal till things bed in?
2. Have only straight through drag pipes, would like to replace but funding low in this climate, and as I am getting a bit older, sensible!!!!, would like to quieten it down. Was looking at Khrome Werks and Samson slip in baffles. Would either of these make a difference to loudness or what would anyone recommend, (diy job)?
Tony,
I'm not going to comment on the smoking issue because there are others on this board that are much more knowledgeable than me on that topic.
I will tell you that the HP Plus baffles by Krome Werks Are a very good choice for you. They will certainly take the edge off the sound of your drag pipes and will improve your low end performance. Yes, it's a DIY job. You may have to drill one hole in the pipes for a retention screw, but that's about it. I have Krome Werks slip-ons on my FXR and they sound pretty good to my ears
Good luck with your project
I agree with the baffle recommendation. As for your engine still smoking, I understand that you mean when you shut it down, The engine smokes a bit??!
When your engine cools down, do a detailed cleaning of the motor & run it again for a day. You really should have made it stop at this point. If it still does, look for new oil leaking at gasket areas.
Hatch.
Cheers about the baffle info, will try that route.
Hatchetman, I mean while engine is idling there is a bit of smoke from both exhausts, not oil burning off engine. The whole engine was cleaned down and it still seems dry.
Thanks
Tony.

Your rings haven't seated yet. You can do a compression check to help confirm this.
