I was at the shop today and was told I should not be running without baffles as it may cause engine damage due to a lack of back presure. I am currently running true duels without baffles and love the soud and the flames at night are always cool. I realize a lot of areas are cracking down on this but figured I mught adress it after the first ticket. Any comments would be great.
The worse thing that no back pressure is hurting is your bottom end torque. There is a baffle called "HP Plus" that slides into any straight pipe that works great and sounds even better. Keeps that deep open pipe sound and just takes the edge off it. They usually take most of the decel pop out.
You wont hurt your valves if.............You have scavenging.
Your engine will actually scavenge some exhaust at the end of it's exhaust stroke. If you run strait pipes, there might not be any left for the engine to pull back.
If you run smaller diameter pipes & keep them long. You will be helping the engine breath properly & increase hp. You can install the slip in baffle like was mentioned which will aid in engine breathing & still give you the sound you have now.
His post was your best bet!

I personally don't know how u can stand that much noise, or let alone want to bring that much attention to urself!! I'm not old by any means, took my baffles out, rode my king to work, and after i got home put em right back in because i want to be able to hear everything by the time i'm 60 and also didn't want to do any damage to the motor not having any backpressure. Try Big City Thunders replacement baffles, easy in/out and i got the sound i wanted!!
Thanks for the comments.
I was also told I might be able to use cones inside the headers. As far as the torque, can I retard the ignition slightly to help this out. Not sure if the "HP Plus" will fit into my "mufflers". With the stock true duals do ya think their is enough scavenge. I have always loved the sound of an open exhaust potato, potato, potato, and worked rock shows for 10yrs so hearing 100% is not an option.
Cheers
Any idea what slip ons these are,I just bought bike around xmas, and Picked up some stock mufflers ,but would rather leave these pipes ,if I can get baffles to pass inspection,See pic.
Lack of baffles cannot hurt the motor but a lean mixture can. Lean mixture will be caused by opening up the pipes that much. I still don't know why shops cannot get that in their heads but anyway.
I can cones before and they were okay. Also you can try the washer trick as well as a cheapo but loud baffle alternative. They worked great on my previous bike and got rid of the horrible de-acceleration noise. If you don't know what the washer trick is let me know and I will find the link.
