If the mixture screw doesn't have any affect you have some problems. Check for a vacuum leak, ensure that the low speed circuits are clean and open. The screw should affect the idle. We usually don't drill the slide on stage 1 or 2 as it opens the slide way too fast for the street.
Go to the 46 / 170 jet combination. I haven't seen it mentioned here, but set your float to the upper limit, as per the service manual. A low float level will not pull the fuel up into the carburetor, causing the lean condition. Again, read the service manual. The carburetor has to be at a 15-20 degree angle to set it. Good luck. TJ

Whats this about choke needs to be at 15 -20 degree angle? I thought it was just a simple enrichener, pull all the way out for full.
Thought maybe I was missing something. Quick thought what do you do for an enrichener cable that won't stay out when you put it to wide open?
PITA standing there holding it.

My Wide Glide enrichener moves in (leaner) immediately after I release it. The bike starts easily at full rich and then idles easily at the slightly leaner position. On a really cold day, I will hold the enrichener full out (richer) until it starts. Then I let go and as the enrichener slides in (leaner) the bike idles. I think it is designed to go a little leaner when you let go. It is still in a rich position after that, and will need to be pushed in as you see fit during the first couple of miles, but by automatically sliding in (leaner) the engine is allowed to run and idle normally until it is fully warmed up.
Carefully turn the plastic inner ****/nut (it's the little black ring behind the enrichner ****), this will tighten the housing around the cable and if it isn't worn out it will keep the enrichner out. That plastic nut is easy to break so only turn it a little at a time.
