Thanks once again buddy! I never had that but you say you used both? I guess if I have a problem again,I should consider this.I'm thinking if the rubber one has been used 3-4 times ,it's probably time to change it anyway.

The gasket replaces the O-ring. I've also used it more than once with success. The three hole derby covers warp and thats why they leak/seep. I believe it comes from the numerous heat up cool down cycles. Take and put the cover on a piece of glass and you'll probably find that it contacts the glass at the three bolt locations and its raised in between them. A new one setting on the glass will be the opposite. The three points of contact are between the holes and slightly raised at the bolt hole locations. Thus when snugged down it flattens and makes the seal.

I believe also that this is the reason the MoCo went to the five hole set configuration.

Mine leaked with a new derby cover. That's why I use the o-ring and gasket.

I think mine leaked cause the O ring kept slipping out of the groove in a spot. When i added just a tad of sealer,it stayed in place and no more leakes.I'm getting ready to change the fluids tomarrow and if I have probs again,my local Indy has both the gasket and o ring.My cover appeared to be ok when I checked it last time. Thanks!

Once you have it installed and not leaking, next time you have it off take a sharpie and mark the inside as to which way is straight up. I've found that getting them on with the same orientation eliminates much of the leak issues. I think they all warp a little and conform to the primary cover...works for me...

My '88 used to leak at the derby all the time, not much, just enough to be annoying, on my '96 I solved the problem by finding a used primary cover for a '99 (night train) and went to the 5-hole derby, Now I have the gasket and the thing doesn't leak. But I do remember even back in the early 90's we were going to machine shops to get o-rings slightly larger that would ensure a tight seal. It still fit the groove, just a bit larger....
I guess if it was anything older than an evo we would say it was "just marking its spot"

I think he changed the outer primary to a 99 which then allowed the use of the 5-hole derby.

Thanks for the input guys!!

I also spoke to a buddy who rides a 74 FLH who gave me some good advice as he also has the 3 hole derby on his shovel...
Here's my plan moving forward: Remove o-ring, put Hylomar RTV on new gasket, take a rubber mallet to derby cover (if needed), reinstall gasket and derby cover. have a beer and be thankful that I didn't have to spend $70+ on a new derby cover.
