Paint question
Got a 1999 FXR3 and I want to get the rear fender re-painted. Being that it's a CVO and may be a bitch to match, does Harley do painting if I take it in and have them send in my fender? I don't have a painter I can trust to match the candy blue color nearby.
My Glide is Hi Fi Candy Blue (or some combination of those words!) and I had a couple of bits painted locally to 'match' but with not much success, so I share your concern about getting things just right. I haven't heard the factory does paintwork, except on new parts, but there has to be a solution out there.
The fender can be returned to HD to have it repainted, but be prepared to jump thrtough some hoops to get that done. Because it's a CVO color the dealer has to provide proof that the returned parts are off a legitimate CVO bike. Chances are your delaer has never had to go through this process and may not want to go through the process. When I chipped the paint on the front fender of my FXR2 I asked the dealer to look into getting it repainted at the factory for me. At first all he did was look up the part number for a replacement fender, then told me it was an obsolete part. Eventually he did contact the factory paint shop and got the correct information. However, he quoted me $900 for having the front and rear fender repainted.
Screw that. I found a local custom painter that was willing to do a color match forme. He showed me a sample panel he sprayed out last week and I just dropped off the fender to him tomorrow. I'll let you know how it works out in a few weeks.
