Exclamation Help...Which Charging System????

Hi All,

Have a duff regulator that needs replacing on a 1986 FLSTC.
Problem is that the bike should have a 22Amp system, but the connector on the present regulator appears to be of the newer 32Amp type, ie, it has 2 pins with a small molded rubber collar around them that goes over the socket on the crankcase.
The earlier connector does not have this collar.
Also the regulator is a Custom Chrome one but I cannot find a part number only a guarantee number.
The only other info I can give is that the socket on the crankcase is orange in color, I don't know if this is relevant or not?
The previous owner "thinks" he had the system upgraded!!!!!!!!! If he did so and a CC kit was fitted, looking at their catalog, their kit to upgrade to a 32 amp system has an orange socket on crank case.
Now the techi bit.
I put a meter between the connector points on the crankcase and got approx 20vac at 1000rpm (19.4 to 20.1)and around 40vac at 2000rpm (37.5 to 40.1). The manual says the 22Amp should be 19-26vac and the 32Amp 16-20, so they overlap a bit.
Not good at ohms, but as far as I can see the ohm reading is 0.1 resistance, ie, reading between one pin in socket and crankcase.
I think I have done all the tests ok and all is pointing to an upgraded system, but, is there any other way to know which system I have, and what are the consequences of running the wrong regulator with the wrong charging system?
Sorry for being a bit long winded, but I know there is a lot of info out there and the more details I can give, the better.
Cheers,

Tony.

You have identified the part correctly. The regulator sorts the output, it can cope with larger numbers to a degree but I don't think you will have an issue.

Use a 32 Amp regulator, what ever brand you like. Stay away from the really inexpensive ones as they are priced like that for a reason.

You can go with as many amp system as is available for your bike, just make sure you buy the entire 3 pice unit. I went with the cycleelectric system and never looks back.

The plug/connector tells you what amperage you have. They are different for different amperages so that you cant put the wrong regulator on. Pick up a Bikers choice catalog and in the regulator section they have a chart that wil identify which one you have. Hope this helps.

The Doctor is right here, we stopped using CC stuff back in the '90's. We got tired of sending stuff back or re-machining stuff to make it work.

A 22 amp plug will have small pin connectors at the plug, 32 amp systems have a larger pin style. Color doesnt tell the amp of the system, its just a prefference the compnay used for the plug. They could use pink if they wanted to.

That means the windings are shorted to ground. The stator needs replacing.

Go with any 32 amp stator that you like e.g. factory style, due to the pins being much larger and stronger. I like Compufire's 32 amp regulator because it "opens up" to regulate the output rather than shorting down the voltage when the RPMs are high.

Keep us posted, we're all in the same boat.
