Hello all and happy Easter! I have a problem with my 94 FLHTC 80" with Screamin eagle air filter, Tru duals w/Rush slipons 1 3/4 baffles, EV13 Cam Scramin eagle ign module CV Carb 45 pilot dynojet needle and emultion tube dynojet 180 main jet stock slide and spring. The problem Im having is'nt all that serious it more so just bothers me as it did'nt use to do this. It's a little hard to explain what it's doing and I have been rying to resolve it for some time. What it does is when a I first start it up with the enrichner it starts right up but within a couple of seconds it starts to kinda lope as if its only hitting on one cylinder i push the enrichner in and idle slows down and still lopes i have to keep it running with the throttle lock once it warms up it smooths out but occasionally does it. I have adjusted on the mixture screw when i turn it in it starts doing it real bad then back the screw out and it will somewhat smooth out I can back the mixture screw almost all the way out with no change in idle but find the turned out around 3 turns i get the best idle. Things i have tryed with no change dismanteled and cleaned carb, tryed 42 pilot same result with mixture adjustment, new plugs (harley) and (NGK), module, coil, primary wires, sensor in nose cone, new manifold seals, vaccum lines, voes, cleaned all electical connections, New battery and cables. Thing is it runs good off idle just sounds terrible at idle, It will idle good just sounds as if one cylinder cuts off at idle. Ran compression test 145 front 144 rear, leak down not sure on the percentage as one gauge was broke but did not get any leakage at valves, Vaccum test at idle gauge fluctuates around 4in at idle but smooths out at rpm. Ok i know this is a lenghty post and thanks for bearing with me and if any ideas please send them my way.
Pull off your air cleaner & grab a can of WD-40 or brake cleaner. With the bike running, spray your intake where it meets the heads on the front & than the rear cylinder. Listen for an idle change. Dont spray into the carb!
Check both plug gaps. My evo is very picky & likes .040
Make sure your wires are connected properly at both ends
Check your throttle shaft bushings by pulling up & pushing down. if your idle changes while you do this, your sucking air from loose bushings or the rubber receiver that your carb pushes in to.
Hatch.
I have checked for intake leaks with WD40 and propane several times before and after replacing intake seals. As for plugs and wires I;m good there to. I have'nt looked at the throttle shaft I will check this first thing.
Try a 50 or 52 mid jet and 195 or 200 main. Set mix @ 2 1/2 turns.
My bet is you're real lean.., the old days are gone with our mandated current 10% corn gas!
imho
My bike has almost your exact enhancements and runs the best it ever has with 52/200/2.5T, however I have adj needle (3 from top) and Killer Products CV 38 carb....what a pleasure to ride!
I,m not sure i can go up on jetting with 45 jet it seams a little fat there thats why I tried 42 jet with no change. Plugs look good with 45 jet but after thinking about having no change with 42 maybe they are both lean. Not hard to try a bigger pilot so will give it a try. As for the main I feel it's ok and i know that dynojet jets numbers are'nt the same numbering as keihn I beleive with the dyno 180 jet it will compare to 190 or 195 please correct me if I'm wrong. I to have the adjustable needle in the 3rd groove from top. Thanks for your input!
I had a 45 pilot and changed to a 48 and my bike seems soooooooo much better.Perhaps even take the carb off, disassemble and give a good soaking/cleaning.
One thing that bothers me a little about, "it might be to lean", is with the enrichner on it should be plenty rich, but you say it starts doing it with it on within a few seconds after starting. I would think that would eliminate it being to lean. I have a stock motor in my 99 except for drag pipes and K&N A/C, and have a 45 pilot and 180 main in mine, and I think mine does a little of what you say also. Not really missing, but just seems a little weak on one cyl., until it warms up a little. Did yours start doing this all at once? Changing jets would certainly be a good place to start. With you cam it could be to lean at idle. Just can not see why it would do it with the enrichner on. But then, stranger things have happened. LOL
This is what has me stumped thinking it should be good and rich with enrichner out but does improve a little when pushed in. This is why I tried going down on the pilot but had no change with idle and my mixture screw was pretty much set the same number of turns out with the 42. I tried disconnecting the vacumn to the voes and tank valve by removing vacumn line at carb and just plugging the port no change other than slower idle because of no advance. This problem just started after the bike sat for awhile, figuring plugged up carb i removed it and cleaned it up, Twice actually thinking I may have missed something the first go around but carb did'nt look bad at all. I wish i could explain exactly how it sounds. A good idle would be bumbumbumbumbumbumbum but mine goes bumdunbumdunbumdunbumdunbumdun Hows that for a sound bit not sure that will help anybody understand what it sounds like but it was fun trying. Try typing that real fast bumdunbumdunbumdunbumdun at 1000 RPM
