My good old King is starting to get a little loader, in the valve train. It has about 30K on it , and a recent oil change."Amsoil 20/50".
This is a stock stage one Motor. I am hearing a "tap tap or tick tick" sound. I think I can hear it louder from the left side, maybe through the pipe, not sure.
Seems loudest under a mild load at like 55mph, on a flat road. sounds normal at idle.
The engine mounted oil pressure gauge, reads about 4-5lbs idle, between 15 to 20lbs, depending on temp and rpm at speed.
Is this a lifter giving me a warning tap ? Or am I just hearing normal Evo sounds.
It would make me a little nervous if the INA cam brg. has not been changed to a Torrington. I changed mine out at 27,000 just for piece of mind. It was still in perfect condition, but I have heard to many stories. On the other hand, most of the ones I have heard about generally whine before they go really bad.
Thanks Jim, I would love to slip a new cam in, and have the heads done. Just Not in the budget at the moment.
If this problem forces me to pull the heads, that may give me an excuse.
I understand. I did mine without changing the cam or anything else except the pushrods. I cut the old pushrods out with bolt cutters, and put in Harley Screaming Eagle quick installs. That way you don't have to remove the heads. All I replaced was the cam brg. and the pushrods. Took me about a day and I took my time. On the other hand, that might not be your tap tap. Could be an exhaust leak, or a head gasket also. They can give that kind of tap tap also. Might want to check your primary chain adjustment also. Sometimes a loose exhaust shield can cause this also. I always look for the simple stuff first. Hope some of this helps, and maybe others will chime in here.

Thanks for any help.
EVO motor: due to age 1998 and mileage 30K
Consider review of front rocker cover gasket..The rocker covers are a 3 piece design. The gasket on rocker cover just above exhaust on front jug goes first sometimes due to age..
Causes a phushy tap noise to be heard....small mist or drip visible..test with rag for noise...another noise that causes tapy noise sometimes are the rubber muffler hangers...rubber blocks at rear that mufflers hang from..rear of bike below bags...those rubber blocks dry out and bind the mufflers thus not allowing vibration...test/confirm with some kind of spray by wetting blocks..about $3 each...another is the L-shaped metal muffler support bracket located at rear cylinder that attaches exhaust to transmission..do not remember price but lets say $20 with clamp...test is visual with flashlight...scratch your head..locate..diagnosis if broken(separated from trans.)
Thanks IM, The rear valve cover started to leak last fall, just exactly where you said. I got that burning oil smell. Replaced the whole set.
I will take a close look at the exhaust system, maybe change the rubber mounts, for good measure.
I am hunting for a new set of slip-ons, I think the packing is gone in mine. would like to find a set that are less restrictive, but have a the deeper thunder sound, less crackle. Used would be fine if anyone has some.
When my motor had about 35 k on it I changed the oil to syn. The valves started making a ticking sound. Changed it back to dino and it has been fine since. Now it has 54k on it and still fine.
Not saying that is your problem, only that was my experience.
