Yeah i'm working on one now and don't know if the boot goes on the inside of the primary case, or does the lip remain outside the case?
Any help appreciated!

It has been a while but I think the lip stays on the outside of the primary.
I had same problem. I used the new solenoid (1/4 inch shorter so oil poured out) to rebuild my old one. They are too short for my old FXR 1985. What the hell. They say exact fit, and i measured them because of this thread. Thats a ton of silicone to see where its leaking on the top one New solenoid top oem Harley bottom. Aftermarket one 1/4 in too short
Thats good to know, Im sure thats why mine leaked after I replaced the solenoid on my 85 FXRC, I did like you guys and packed silicone between it and it sealed

The boot lip goes thru tthe hole in primary to the outside and the gasket/o-ring fits into the boot. I got the right part finaly its from dennis kirk (drag specialties part # H2O-109)
