It has been a while but I think the lip stays on the outside of the primary.

I had same problem. I used the new solenoid (1/4 inch shorter so oil poured out) to rebuild my old one. They are too short for my old FXR 1985. What the hell. They say exact fit, and i measured them because of this thread. Thats a ton of silicone to see where its leaking on the top one

New solenoid top oem Harley bottom. Aftermarket one 1/4 in too short

Thats good to know, Im sure thats why mine leaked after I replaced the solenoid on my 85 FXRC, I did like you guys and packed silicone between it and it sealed

I think I would make a 1/4" spacer. Fortunately, I replaced mine a few years ago and it did fit fine.

The boot lip goes thru tthe hole in primary to the outside and the gasket/o-ring fits into the boot. I got the right part finaly its from dennis kirk (drag specialties part # H2O-109)
