Yes! Harley has used 'King' in a variety of ways for a long time. As an example, my 'King Tourpak' is off a late 80s bike and when I repainted it (that BEAUTIFUL birch white you all so admire!) I bought and installed the correct sticker on its lid, which I have just checked is still there. I think 'King of the Road' goes back to shovelhead dressers, if not earlier.

So does that mean it should have a batwing and tour pack? Was there any fender script?

A guy pulled up next to me on a twinkie at a gas station a couple of years ago, and said "What IS that? Some kind of stripped-down Electra-Glide or something?" I just stared at him hard for about 5 seconds, and then said "It's a POLICE bike, Scooter..." He got a little wide-eyed, as if he thought I would/could arrest him or something... then regained his composure, turned around, and walked back to his bike without another word.

So many clueless Harley riders out there these days who don't know a piston from a petcock - and who think H-D only started making motorcycles the day they bought theirs...

Early FLT's were known as Tour Glides before they were reintroduced as Road Glides. The Tour Glides were badged as "King of the Highway" and had a name plate below the gas fill door.

I can't be sure, I think 'King of the Highway' was a general tag rather than specific to a model, like if you own any Glide you are KOTH, or all Glides are KOTH.

As for my own King Tourpak (the original Tourpak was smaller, hence when the bigger one was introduced it had to have a name) it came off a bike that had been stripped to make into a custom and I never saw the bike stock, to see if it had any other script on it.

Back Again, can't speak for everyone but I admire the Badboy's and some good ones on the Evo forum, they are compared to the Cuda's and Camaro's in the factory muscle car world in my eyes.

NGH, where the h$ll have you been, the site lost some personality.

I believe that you are correct on the KOTH.

Did a bunch of research last night on the FLHS and they didn not ever come with a tourpack, as these were the cheapist FL's offered in there day. You could order a pack or batwing for it, but it would have been dealer installed. They didnt even have saddle bags in the begining, and they slowly morphed into the Road King. So mine, the way it sat upon purchase, minus the tastless "skull" add-ons was basically the way it came from the moco. FLH with windscreen, saddlebags, rear rack with backrest, and split side exhaust.

I bought my FLHS bike new and added the tourpak and batwing later, having bought them both secondhand. The tourpak actually came off a Statue of Liberty Centenary model (late 80s), which bolted straight on and I wired in myself. The batwing came off an early 80s Glide, which I made entirely new hardware to mount. The factory batwing kit was a stupid price! When new my bike had it's current saddlebags (they were blue originally) and a windshield, so looked just like an early RK, except the engine was plain silver.

Do you have any pics of the batwing mounting? Do you know the "cutoff" year of the batwing that fits our bike? I like the RK style windscreen but the protection of the batwing for long distance.......best of both worlds.

I plan to adapt the the twinkie quick-release tourpack hardware, since I'm going to a late model seat. I have a stock 2009 seat sitting in the garage and the origanal seat is trashed and the pan is cracked. With the 09 seat the origanal TP/Rack mount cant be used. I wonder if the RK quick release windscreen hardware can be adapted to my bike? Project for a later date, maybe when snow comes.
