Default tour pack

I have a paint job scheduled for the 3rd week in august when we/re going on 2 weeks vacation in Italy so gotta strip down the bike. In the week before I'm on afternoon shift which leaves not much time in the day for working on bike and of course if weather is good at beginning of week I gotta ride. So question with the tour pack and rear fender probably being the most time consuming part of strip down is it possible to remove tour pack ahead of time and still be able to ride? Keep in mind this isn't by any means the quick release type and has probably got some un normal mounting setup as it was a cop bike converted to flhtc.

Default Tour pack removal

Not sure about yours but on my 86 flht under the rubber mat in my tourpac there are four bolts that hold it on. The nuts are welded into the mount underneath it. Just remove those three, undo the antenna, and the quick release for the lights its off.

Mine has an aluminum plate in the tour pack. Sheesh I never even thought about the wiring, I do know a few weeks back when I rewired again I soldered up the wires coming from the rear including from the tour pack to under my seat. The wiring was made with extention cord if you can beleive, which before deciding to paint I was going to rewire properly this winter.

If it was a cop bike previously the tourpak has been wired in afterwards in some way. The tourpak itself is held on with just four bolts through the floor. I don't have a rubber mat in mine - didn't even know there was supposed to be one!

So it boils down to following the wiring from underneath your TP, to see how it is connected up. It may just be a stack of 3M crimp connectors out of sight behind the left side cover. I have a twist-lock quick release connector in the floor of mine, so that is an upgrade you can consider when you rebuild.

(Link removed - not what I thought it was!)

Default tour pack

Well, not entirely sure if my rubber mat is orig but if someone cut it out they did a perfect job of fitting it!
Just checked my orig owners manual "Unplug tourpack wiring harness at rubber connector. classic models, disconnect antenna, lift lid and remove mat from bottom of tourpack exposing bolts. remove four bolts while holding tour pack so as not to drop it. I didnt read this first time I removed mine, talk about moving quick, to not to let it hit floor!

I like the idea of a quick detach. Graham it looks like I will have to unsolder and resolder wires into the harness so I can wire in a quick connect. When I rewired a few weeks back I wired so the tour pack lites and bag lites come on with a toggle so that part is already isolated for simplicity. I think I may have to replace the mount that comes off the struts, it looks like crap. Is one place better than others for getting this main mount and a quick release hardware? Is the hardware specific for specific years? I'm pretty sure the frames are all the same for flh's including where they mount.

Mine had the quick release on it when I purchased, and I absolutely love it. I can have it on/off in about 1 min, I highly reccomend it. I only take it off for cleaning/maintenance because I've become spolied for a place for the helmet/clear glasses/sweatshirt for the wife etc. I do have a sissy bar that I can mount, but haven't figured out how to reconnect the antenna and haven't been real motivated to try!!!

i fitted the 97 up rear detatch kit and rack to my 95 no problems, had to slighly space out the rear detatch kit as the 97up is about half an inch wider at the rear apparently but it all fitted really easy. these are the part numbers you need

Tour pak - 53276-04
Rear docking kit - 53804-06

if you want some detailed pics etc let me know, its so nice to have the QD the bike handles so differenlty without the tourpak on and now it goes on and off in about 20 seconds!

Hey Neil I'd greatly appreciate detail pics. Where'd you buy the parts?
