Intermitent Starting Problem
Ever notice that most cars and all bikes now a days have daytime running lights or auto headlights? They are on anytime the engine is running. But they also have circuitry that shuts off the lights while the starter is engaged, which gives the starter more energy to work with from the battery. The Evo era bikes have a jumper wire that connects the light circuit to both "Ign" and "Lights" positions on the key switch, to be in compliance with federal regs that say all bikes have to have the headlight on when the engine is running. This was a poorly thought out, but very simple and cost effective way to bring the bikes into compliance. On modern bikes, I noticed that the lights all go out when the starter is engaged, which means to me that they finally worked in the circuitry needed, but for my 90 Tour Glide, I just cut the jumper wire and remind myself to turn the switch to lights after the engine is running. Works like a charm for me.
