Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have run into a problem trying to start my Dyna project bike. I have installed a new starter, a new starter solinoid and a new battery. I have had the bike running a couple times so I know my wiring is correct.
I now only get a click from the relay switch when I try to start the bike. I have traced power to the solinoid and power to the starter when I press the start button. But as far as any movement from the solinoid or starter nothing.....I tried grounding the large post of the solinoid to the small "green wire" post, there was a little sparking but no action from the solinoid. I have a feeling the battery is not 100%, I have charged it a few times and the lights on the bike are bright but I don't think it has the amps to drive the starter......is there anything else I should be looking at? I have tried cleaning all the cables and made sure the ground was good on the bike. Its an Interstate battery, has anyone else had issues with them?
It is the correct battery according to the Interstate cat.
I checked the volts and it was 12.4
I noticed when I charge the battery, the needle on the charger jumps around a lot......it may not be holding a full charge.
I am going to try another one.
Bob, I tried that also.....when I hit the button the volts dropped but only a little to 12.05.
I may try boosting the bike from a car....
I charged the battery over night, this morning I heard a slight noice comming from the solinoid....at least it finally made a noice after two days of nothing.
I am thinking the battery doesn't have the umphh to drive the starter.
Stkman, the starter relay is definately working, it is sending the power to the solinoid. I know the starter push button is working fine. Everything seems to be doing its job, there just doesn't seem to be enough juice to activate the starter itself.
I am going to work on it again tonight......I have a boost pack that I will hook up.....if it works then the Interstate battery is headin' for the trash
I think you should try jumping the bike off from your car. First, make sure the connection between the battery cables and the battery is perfectly clean and free of oxidation.
Ok Night train I hear what your saying, BUT I check all this out more then once on my bike drove me nuts and of course everyone knows what the problem is. I replaced the relay, contactors, installed larger gauge wire, check and clean all connections from starter to battery still only a click. So one day my buddy stops by and I'm installing the low down starter button and he say the switch on your handle bars is corroded and you could see green corrision in the switch. We clean the switch with contact cleaner and the bike started for about two weeks until I washed the bike which I normally don't do.
Can you give me voltage numbers at the relay, from handle bar switch to relay, and voltage going from relay to starter solnoid with starter switch pressed? To me your battery sounds ok, and if you jump the bike with your car it will propely start, which mind did the samething never could figure out why. I'm not sayong you have the same problem as I did it just sounds the same. If I can help just ask I'll check back later.
