I had some issues with sediment getting into the carb, causing it to cut out. I have rinsed out the tank, cleaned the filter screen, and pretty much cleaned out the entire carb with carb cleaner. The issue I am having is, the bike starts (after turning over multiple times), runs for a bit, then dies. I have new plugs and a new gas line (it was old and swelling). I'm not sure what else to try.
Sounds like a float adjustment to me. I run an S&S that needs to be cleaned out every couple of years. Tiny sediment in passages and the fuel likes to gel in the accelerator pump. I also run an inline filter between the jugs in addition to the petcock screen.
Did you convert to a Pingel or similar petcock along with the carb change? The Pingel is a nice piece of hardware, but the filter screen is so coarse as to be useless as a filter compared to the stock petcock.
Sounds like the pilot jet may be too small or, more likely, partially blocked with sediment or varnish. Mine has spells where it will start cold with a couple of shots from the acdfelerator pump, but die as soon as the initial shot of fuel is burned off. This can be a blocked pilot jet, as I mentioned. Also, check the enrichener, and make sure it fully opens when the **** is pulled out. The stock Harley enrichener cable can sometimes cause problems here.
Get a good in-line fuel filter, clean the carb and blow out the passages. Try that it should solve your problem. Be sure to check that the tank vent is open. Hope this helps.
Maybe I got some bad gas? The bike sat about a week without being ridden. I cleaned out the Mikuni completely and even put on a new fuel line. I put all new gas in.
The bike rode great the rest of the day and never hesitated. It sat over night and started hesitating as soon as I tried to start it the next day. The coughing cleared up in a few minutes somehow.
What I want to know is if the gel is forming in the float bowl and being sucked into the jets, or if it is being washed in from the tank. I'll be putting an inline filter in this weekend.
Either the station got diesel dumped in the wrong tank, or someone out there doesn't like you and put ivory snow in your tank and you now have napalm. You need to rinse out the entire fuel system and replace the rubber hoses.
