I am looking at a very clean and well maintained 87 electra glide bike looks good and gets a clen bill of health from the sellers mech and the seller said he would have it tuned up and gone over one more time before I pick it up.
The stereo has been upgraded and the bike has almost 50,000 miles
I have heard about the race issue and the cases cracking and that is what scares me away from it, should this bother me is it really that common
this bike has a stock untouched motor no cams or any of that just stock all the way through! any help with this decision would be great!
thanks
Very good bike, I just brought home a 89 heritage softail for my wife with 20 k miles and the bike is mint and puts my 89 flhtp to shame. You rarely hear about cracked cases compared to all the good ones. Oh ya and EVO'S rock.
I would buy it. My 86 has had zero prob for me except lil things like cables etc needing to be changed just because of age. I have put prob 5000 miles on her this yr. The head parts manager at the local Harley dealer (Gainesville Harley) just got rid of his 87 flhtc he bought brand new, said best bike ever had. He still rides an EVO by the way.
1990 FLHS here, owned from new! I must admit I no longer have the original motor, but any of the things that went wrong with mine in the early days such as base gaskets will have been sorted long ago. Nothing fixed has given me any problems since, except the starter clutch, which packed up recently for the second time. There are a few things from 1990 on that are small improvements over earlier models, so would be a good choice IMHO.
I have a 96 Electra Glide Classic. Love it, no problem hanging with my friends who have newer bikes. One piece of advice, make sure you have a dealer who knows about EVO's. Luckily I have 5 dealers close enough (<45 miles). 3 of them don't know squat about EVO's. Whenever I called about parts or service they were lost. The other two have mechanics and parts guys that have been around a long time and love helping me. One of them still rides an EVO and everytime I go in I have to spend a half hour talking to him.
