Default Difference in years

Not sure if this is where this question belongs but...

I have a 94 softail springer. Looking at an aftermarket speedo, I don't see many options. But when I look at 95 or 96 models, I see a speedo/tach combo from autometer.

Anyone know what the difference is between a 94 and 95?

Not sure about the difference in 94-95 but they went to the electronic speedo in 96. It has a totally different speedo and indicator lights.

Ok, so I wonder if there is a difference in transmissions or can I just use an electronic pick up and do away with the speedo cable?

You can get a rear wheel speed sensor, and use any speedometer for an 96 up....and you can lose the cable drive off the front wheel at the same time. https://www.google.com/search?q=++Re...w=1440&bih=686

I was thinking about that. Could I also use a tranny pick up?

Nevermind. It doesn't look like my tranny has the electronic speed sensor hole.

From what I've read here one can modify your tranny for installing a pickup. Good luck keep us posted with what you do.

Well, it looks like the pick up sensor hole is machined into the case of the transmission. So, I'll probably be buying a new/used case.
