Default Starting Question

New to this what seems to be a great site and glad to see a section on just the EVO's,
So I got a question fer ya, My problem seems to have started after I put on the S&S Super E carb Kit. The engine cranks over fine with the electric starter as long as I leave the throttle closed and enrichner lever down and it only act this way when the engine is cold. If I give it any gas or pull up on the enrichner lever the motor or the starter boggs way down. After it fires up it runs fine. I bought a set of new starter brushes to put in thinking that might be the problem also the Battery is less then a year old and is always on the battery tender when Im not riding. its got me baffled.

A remote possibility that you pinched a wire on the starter button when you put the new throttle/idler cable in? Something is causing a poor connection when you twist the grip. Just a thought.

I thought I pinched a wire on the starter button also, checked out fine so I had the battery checked its good. I will put in the new starter brushes and since this bike has 84,000 miles and is 20 years old I orderd a new set of battery cables from J&P

The bizarre part about your symptoms is that it only occurs when you twist the throttle or use the enrichener. Let us know what you find out.

I found out if when I open the enricher about a 1/2" it starts ok. but not like it should. When I replaced old carb with this S%S Super E the VOES tubing was not pluged in to the CV carb for how long I dont know and I would have never noticed it until I pulled the tank off. I wondering if that could have coused this problem or can it be the coil not having enough juice for cold starts?

The VOES (Vacuum Operated Electrical Switch) sends a signal to the ignition module that changes the spark advance 'curve'. I'd have to look in the books again, but I believe the stock HD ignition module only has two curves. So I believe with the VOES disconnected, it would put the ignition of full advance? Which could create a 'slow to start' issue. Anyone else know for sure?

Anyway, I thought your original problem was that the starter was cranking slower when you had the enrichener out or the throttle twisted. Did you mean that the motor was slow to start under these conditions? Is it a 'slow starter' issue, or an engine 'slow to start' issue?

I thought maybe that the voes not being hooked up for a year or longer may have damaged the motor thats why I asked. And yes when I pump the throttle it does cause the motor to bog down. And in my last post I said that if I open the enrichener a 1/2 inch it starts ok but not like it should. I have to hit the starter button two or three time for the motor to fire up to due to the motor turning over slow. This weekend I going to pull the starter and put in new brushes and check all my battery cables. One thing I noticed is when I use the blinkers my voltage gauge goes up and down in sync with the blinkers it could be a ground issue?

Sounds fuel related.S&S are easy to adjust...redadjust the idle and mixture screws...and confirm that the voes is working. If it cold oudside and its a "cold start" ,pull Choke/enrichner all the way up,no throttle..If its warm and a "cold start", 5 or 6 squirts .just a guess. Also if you know the battery is good, new cables and connections is the way to go.Ive got a '92 and all electrical parts have been replaced after 55,000 miles even though they were ok.
