HD hates to change things, even the headlight bucket is the same as the 89's. If you go to a late model lens it uses an H4 bulb, they have the 3 prong setup on the bulb. You can also upgrade your bulb, I have a PIA in mine that is even brighter than the stock HD bulb.
I don't get it. My 86 FLHT came with a separate lens and takes the H4 type bulb. Did they go back to the sealed beam in later years? Doesn't make sense to me. And I KNOW that my bike came that way, because I opened the box myself back in '86.

Yes H4 in mine, I went back to sealed beams! Shell broke on H4.
