OK, this is going to be kinda long, so sorry. I also posted this in the primary section, but no replies so I figured I would try here.
Anyways, I have a 92 Springer with the EVO and just under 30k miles. Last Wednesday I took it for a ride and stopped at the local shop to let them listen and ride it because I changed from a 2/ to 2/2 pipes and thought it may need rejetting. The mechanic rode it and said it seemed fine to him, however he heard a noise comming from the primary. I told him I had been hearing a noise, but thought it was the springs squeaking. Told me it could be either bearings or actuator loose, but no way to find out w/o popping the cover. I told him go for it as I was scared to ride back the 40 miles to the house. So they did, and called me into the bay once it was off. He said the actuator was very loose because he could tighten it with a ratchet and it should be so tight it needed a big ratchet/cheater bar. He also grabbed the (I think) Primary and twisted it from side to side and said there should be absolutely no play in it and that my bearing was shot. I told them to fix it! They called me later the next day and said that both bearings (primary and clutch pack I think) were bad and they needed replaced, I said ok. Well, I picked it up today and there is a new noise that wasnt there before and the squeaky spring noise is still there.
The new noise as best as I can describe it sounds like a banshee wailing or a ghost wailing lol.... It is there when I decel or let off the throttle and is loud enough to hear over the pipes.
Might take a little while to bed in,but a loud shreik shouldn't be.
My primary whines when I down shift,it's just how it goes..
Does it feel like anything through the bike.
Pull the clutch in out of gear and listen for a rattle maybe.
Starter clutch not disengaging? Have someone listen for it to disengage when you kill the engine. Solenoid may be staying engaged. Feel the starter body and solenoid after a short ride. If they are excessively hot that may be your problem.
Bama he said only on decel so it could be a deflection of the outer clutch hub on the inner or something like that.
All old Harley jack shafts get lazy though I reckon.
It doesnt make any rattling sound at all. I was thinking maybe bearing is to tight or something like that? I have never worked on a bike, but have turned plenty of wrenches on vehicles. I associated the sound with getting bearings to tight when rebuilding a rear end. I think I will try and see if someone else can ride it and see what they think
