Plus 1 on the circuit breakers, been there. You can always bypass your ignition switch connected the wires together with nut and bolt to illuminate the ignition switch. Was into my wifes heritage the other day, super easy to work on that stuff, your Lucky it's not a bagger. If its like an 89 you have 3 plugins on the carb side behind the tank, give them a spray down as well and also I noticed on the wife's the front wires are a tight squeeze under the front of tank. I'm pretty sure you can pull the right tank and plug off the cross over line to illiminate wires being pinched.

Don't forget to look for spark when it shuts down. Yesterday was out riding with my trusty ol' '95 FLHTC which has never let me down and she decided to shut off. I checked for spark and all was good but she wouldn't start. I had filled the tank about 40 miles previously so I knew I wasn't out of fuel. I put the petcock on reserve and it started right up and purred like a kitten. Started riding and all was well. Put the petcock back on main and after about 1/8 mile it shut off again, so I reached down and switched back to reserve and she came back to life. So this weekend I will be rebuilding the petcock. Should be interesting to see what's going on, I think it's probably the rubber seal in there has swollen from the ethanol. I will let all know what it is. Luckily we have the kit that allows us to rebuild the petcock.

John back when I was building Brits the petcocks would leak and I'd go to the hardware store and match up an oring, what's involved with a rebuild on the evo's ?
I have a pingel, and purchased the tools and kits to rebuild them a long time ago. Some parts of the stock unit can be replaced with over the hardware counter. If they are available try to get the buna replacements.
thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions..She has been running great for the past couple of days getting me back and forth to work, working weekends suck..anyway today she quit again a couple of times and i checked for spark .had spark every time.had a plug in my pocket just waiting.finally the last time she had no spark for a few cranks then spark. she fired right up and made it home. i drained the tanks and cleaned out the petcock before the ride tonight.so getting no spark is progress and i will check connection again before looking at the module and pick up in the cone.....thanks again

Always have a spare nose cone pick up dude.
They suffer from heat and then go on the fritz.
I had a bad ignition module that would shut off sometimes, and then restart. Replaced it with a screaming eagle (actually cheaper than the stock type) and its been fine since.
Your problem sounds real similar to my '98 fatboy when the cone pickup went bad - replaced the whole ignition with a crane cam & it's done great since. If your cone cover is riveted on, I'd recommend replacing with allen screws instead of re-riveting. A lot easier to open it up and check it next time.
