My 95 softie custom died the other day, Did the stator ground check and sure as hell got a shorted stator and stinks real bad when I pulled the primary cover off. The regulator plug is also half burned/missing, so Im replacing that as well.
So should I stick with stock parts, or go with something else? Harley seems so freggin expensive, but I dont want to short myself and buy $h!t.
Rotors rarley good bad right? Im guessing the only thing that could go wrong with it is physical damage?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
P.S. Dr. Hess, you were right. Took awhile, but your right.

It's a curse.
People seem to like those cycle electric 3 phase things. Personally, I prefer the OEM parts. If I need a regulator on the road, I can get one at any HD dealer or even an aftermarket shop if I have to. The MoCo makes a 32 amp replacement set and I think I'm going that way eventually. I'm still running the original stator (knock on wood) and I'm on the 2nd regulator, ~80K miles.
I'm with DR Hess on OEM. Never had a bad one yet. I've also heard good things on cycle electric stuff tho I've never used anything of theirs. Accel used to be what I bought, but now it's a crap shoot wether it's any good or not.

When my system failed, I left the decision up to my Indy. I did not install it myself so he made the call. He choose Accel. When I posted about it, most of the replies were negative concerning Accel, so for me if there is a next time, it will be 100% OEM. No exceptions.
What could make a stator burn up or ground out? I've only got 40k on my bike, and I would like to avoid going through this again if there's an underlying issue that would cause it.

In my case the rubber plug on the case were the wires runs out of the case to the regulator wore out over time, and the wire shorted against the case. Burnt up the whole system.

How many miles? With the few people I've talked to, they've gotten over twice the mileage I have. I know I need to rejet due to shorter drag type pipes, but it shouldn't run that hot should it?
