Hello my fello riders. I installed this led on my dash per this site and notice that at idle my led blinks as if advancing and retarding constantly at idle speed my question is would this be normal at idle. My voes is set at 6 inches of vaccum and vaccum at motor is 9 inches but fluctuates the needle on my gauge rapidly and hard to tell what the lower level is. So my concern is should i adjust my voes to less vaccum or is this normal? my idle speed is at 1000 rpm so i know not idleing to slow. The light and voes seems to be functioning properly just off idle. My setup is stock motor with tru-duals K&N breather EV-13 cam Single fire ignition. The reason i have done this is i get a little pre ignition rattle at excellaration and retarded the timing and still get a little rattle so installed this led to see what my voes is doing.
Mine drops completely off the VOES at idle when it is cold. My idle is probably set around 600 when cold, so I speed it up with the throttle lock to where it advances the timing. I also have a toggle switch wired in in series with the VOES so that I can manually switch it off at idle if I want a nice slow potato potato after it is warmed up good. Does your led come on when under load? I would think it would if it was working properly which if I am reading this right switches on when the VOES switches off.
the voes seems to be working properly under load and the bike idles good. Im just not sure about it kicking in and out at idle. The constant advancing and retarding at idle only will this cause a problem is my concern other then that runs just fine
If you raise your idle just a tad it should stay solid. Sounds like it is just on the edge of enough vacuum to make it switch back and forth. Personally I would not worry about it as it will not hurt anything at all.
the voes works like a vacuum advance in a distributor. under load, low or no vacuum, it will retard your timing. if i disconnect mine then my bike will really idle low. it runs better connected.

Thanks for the reply
The only thing that is a problem is too much information. Your VOES was probably very happy with life until you fitted that gauge, now it is in the spotlight it has stage fright! Stop constantly fretting.....
I'm with Tup. I think you're "treating a number," as we say in medicine. That is, there's nothing wrong with the patient, but you have this number (light) that is out of range and you think you have to do something about it.
If your bike is "pinging" under load set the VOES to 7mm hg and that should cure the problem unless you are in the wrong gear. This will also make you a little crazier as your light will blink a little more. The design of the V-twin engine and intake will give you a major fluctuation in vacuum. or perhaps your valves need a little work Hope this helps.

I asked my S&S man if I could fit one of those timing chest oil pressure gauges someone gave me as a gift. He wasn't impressed that it is a genuine Harley one, and called it a 'worry gauge'! ptcruiser just installed a 'worry meter'! Best not to watch either of them too closely.......
LOL! Ok took your advise and cut the wire going to the light and WOW I don't notice it doing it anymore Thanks for your help gentlemen! As for the pinging I did have to adjust the voes and set it at 7 in vaccum as it was at 4 in. It did correct the pinging. Now that I know I'm setup correctly I cut the wire and forget about it and all is good.
