Default 84 FLTC Newbie questions

hello everyone new to the forum. I just picked up an 84 FLTC. I know she is missing some parts and I am also gonna need replacement parts im sure once I go over everything. My question is whats my best route for getting parts? and finding out what the part # is? is a parts manual available just for this series with diagrams? Thank everyone in advance for any info.

Sweet ride. Ebay will be your best bet for parts IMO. Pinwall, and RSI are probably the 2 biggest in used parts. I have bought a lot of stuff from RSI.

I visited Daytona in 85 and hired the identical twin of your bike! Plenty of experience and help in here, so welcome to HDF from the UK.

Harley publish a service manual and parts book for your model and year, it will probably cover all the big twins. You should be able to get new copies from any dealer, possible secondhand ones from Ebay.

Welcome from Texas. Some indy's have extra parts and that is the way I try first. That way you can look at a real part and not just a picture. As stated above a Parts manual and a Service manual should be available from your local dealer.

One other way for parts is here. I have noticed that some forum members have parts that they aren't using and would be happy to send them to you.

As you're new to this stuff, I'll just add that I have found through personal experience, that in general, it is best to stick with OEM parts whenever possible. Some aftermarket parts are good quality, better than OEM, some are the same and a whole bunch are junk. I ride an Evo (that I bought new), so I don't have to buy a lot of parts. That means that I don't buy enough parts to be able to know which parts are as good or better than OEM and which parts are junk. I do know that the HD part will be either as good as the original part or about the best approximation of that part available today. It is pretty easy to save $20 today and it cost you $200 tomorrow. Kuryakyn anything is a good example.

The shop and parts manual will be your best friend. I have found the shop manual very well written.

Is it an Early 84 or Late 84? That is the year they changed the clutch assembly. Early 84 has the shovelhead style and late has the one with the diaphragm spring.

And if you know your part, look it up on Dennis Kirk, it lists the OEM# in the specs. And you can check fitment there too.
