okay, i can't find it.... and it's driving me crazy
sounds like it's coming from the left-upper-front rocker area at about 2000-2500 at roll on
i've done everything i can think of
-timed properly with DTT
-stock cam gear on EVL3010
-honed all 4 pushrod tubes
-SE adjustables
-new Harley 'B' lifters
-checked everything in primary
-no exhaust leaks
few specs:
Heads by Dewey
SE 10:1 pistons
anyone else offer up any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... i'm beginning to resign myself to swapping the engine with Harley's reman program...but MAN, i have sunk money and love into this thing
only after the upgrades, texas ....which is why i did the things i listed, above
i don't know what else it could be
It could very well be detonation.
The main problem is that you changed so many things at once. Since it started after upgrades it has to be something you did.
On my bike almost every problem I have had is due to something I did when doing an upgrade. All I can tell you is go back through everything you did one thing at a time.
you're thinking detonation? ....i've timed this thing all over the place, and i'm stumped.... the only thing i can think of is maybe valve springs are too light for the .500 cam?
What gas are you running??? Do you have the VOES hooked up??? If not hook it up. Try to get your gas from a station that has three hoses, one for each grade. That way you don't dilute the high test with the regular that is in the hose and pump. Run the bike low on fuel then fill it up at a station with three hoses, then put in a good name brand octane booster and see if it still rattles. You can also get on it and if it rattles, shift down a gear or two and see if it still does it. If it goes away then it is detonation. Hope this helps

You don't have enough duration for that much compression. That cam has 234 you need at least 240 to run 10 to 1. This chart will help:http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/camdb.htm
mia, yes....it comes and goes... disappears for seconds at a time, then comes back
and Tom, you are correct....i should have looked at the specs before i installed it.... comp actually comes in at 9.8:1, according to Don when he cc'd the heads with the SE pistons
thinking i might go back to the EV27 (rattling wasn't as bad- though it was the fast ramps)....or move to an EVL3020?
If it is doing it in the last gear at roll on then it is defintley detonation, you have a good ignition system, have you backed down the timing to see if it goes away? Detonation sounds like a bag of marbles bouncing off each other and can hear it clearly when active.
I have 9.8-1 with Woods w6h 42 intake closing and 240 duration, dropping back timing for the roll on area you are mentioning is needed, your 3010 is closing earlier and less duration which is building slight bit more compression, you can make the 3010 live with some tuning, voes or checking afr's, a 3020 will be a good match with the light bike and relieve a little pressure and will compliment the headwork done.
