Default Help with starting issues

Hello Guys,

So I get my ape hangers on, and get ready to go for a ride, when my bike wont start.

The starter is spinning but dosent sound like its connecting to turn the bike has anyone else had this problem?.

What is the problem, and how easy is it to fix?

Thanks
Matt Wenning

If it ran before the new bars , has to be something you did with the wiring . Make sure its getting spark , that's where I would start

It sparks, and runs great once its started, I figured it had something to do with the jackshaft assembly.

Every once in a while it would do it, but correct itself, now the starter spins, but no turning over of the engine.

sounds like a poor electrical connection. or low battery. Low voltage situations will allow a starter to turn but not fully engauge. double check your electrical work all connections, cold solders, etc.....

Have you tried to jump across the big terminal and the small terminal on the solenoid with the key on to see if it will crank? Tap the solenoid while doing this. It sounds like a solenoid problem.

Thanks guys, I will check those things out. I wondered if it may be the voltage, I really hope it is.

Was it making any loud noises when starting prior to this? I'm thinking the starter clutch might be bad, but normally it makes a grinding noise when it fails to immediately hook up, prior to it failing altogether.

thats what the guys at the shop told me today, that it was the starter clutch. It was giving me problems every once in a while before, but after the long sit while doing the bars it went bad completly.

Thanks for all your help guys,

Sounds like the starter clutch to me. Had exact same problem a year ago and 1 day it did not want to catch at all. Change it now before you have to get pushed.
