Default Vent Fitting

On the tank for my build there is a looks like a rod on the right bottom front of the tank. It appears to be welded shut, but may just need the end cut off. This tank is a one piece custom for a 98 softail with three fittings that I know of on the bottom and one gas cap wih a vented cap. Two for the crossovers and the petcock fitting. Can someone tell me if that fitting is supposed to be a vent? A picture would be awesome.

A picture of your tank might help us! Take a look inside the tank. If it is a vent you should be able to see the upper end of it, as it will only work if that comes above the level of the fuel, when the tank is full. If you need a vent you could use a vented cap.

Thanks grbrown! I do have a vented gas cap. I am having my welder knock that whatever it is off and weld over it. It looks horrible up on the front of the tank anyway. I have a vented gas cap that does not have a check ball in it, so I should be fine.

That is a vent like brown said. In troubleshooting an 86 glide that had been owned by my buddies uncle. We finally traced his fuel flow problems to that vent. There is a cap welded on at the factory prior to paint. It had never been pierced and was causing fuel problems. Amazing it had never been caught in almost 25 years. His uncle had had it into multiple dealers complaining of the issues. Took some beers and the HD manual to fix the issue.
