OK everybody stand up and put your hand out palm up and look at your palm!!! That's about how much rubber you have between you and the road. I prefer a tire that is responsive and handles better!!! That's why I use Avon's. Now I own a shop and can put whatever I want on it and I still use Avon's. Yes your dealer will reccomend the 402's, etc. that's because he gets them through harley cheaper than the Indy's can so he makes more money!!! The money you save over the years won't add up to the expense of one tire related accident. Hope this helps.

I cheated a bit and by-passed the dealership altogether. I found a brand new D402 on Ebay for $99 bucks, free shipping and had a local indy mount it for $20.

The next time you need a tire stay away from the D402's. There are much better tires out there. They may cost a little more but road rash and broken bones cost more.

I have found that pushing these tires to the limit, (like riding the Tail of the dragon dragging floarbords) i have never had any negative issues regarding grip on any of the following tires, Dunlop D402, K591 & EIII's, Pirelli Night ragons, Avon Venom X and Michelin Commanders...The only difference was the wear...They all did good when they were new, The D402 was a bit squirely on Tar snakes and groves...Other than that, The best out of all of these was the EII, then Commander, K591, D402, Avon then Pirelli.... I rated them that way because of wear... Difference between about 6000 miles(showning cords) on the Avon and Pirelli to 11000 miles on the EIII with rubber left ...
I can't wait to put my Commander II...

Just out of curiosity first you say you never had any negative issues regarding grip on any of the following tires, Dunlop D402 etc.. then you say "The D402 was a bit squirrely on Tar snakes and groves"

Sounds like a negative issue to me.

I had the same problem with the 402's that is why I went looking and settled on the Dunlop 491 Elite II's (which are not squirrely on tar snakes or grooves).

By the way I found the 402's squirrely on road paint too.

Well if one of my main issues is being squirrely, looks like I may want to look into the 491 EII's then...

THC: I found the 491 EII's for $146 and free shipping online. How do you like them overall? How's the wear compared to the D402? My dealer is 2 weeks out on service appointments right now due to a major 911 ride coming through next week, so I have time to order online and save some money.(in fact the service guy himself even suggested that, I LOVE this shop!)

Overall they are great in my opinion. They last longer than the 402's and grip the road like glue right from the start.

I am on my second back tire now.
