Default Open T fitting in fuel system.

I have a 97' FXDWG. It has a S&S carb. I noticed a fuel smell around the bike. The other day but didn't see any pudding fuel anywhere. I just figured someone twisted the throttle. Yesterday i was shaking a wire under the tank and i noticex this open T fitting coming from the carb. Im wo dering if this is normal or what the deal is. I have had the bike about 3 months and put 2k miles on it at least. It runs great with no issues. Should i cap this fitting? Here is a pic. I didnt pull the tank as it had half a tank in it.

The only "T" fitting that is normally under there is a vacuum line. One hose goes to the petcock and the other should go to the VOES switch. Both should be hooked up. If the VOES was removed, replace it and hook it back up. If the open "T" fitting hasn't been plugged you have a vecuum leak, so that is a good reason by itself to replace the VOES.
That beig said, it should not give you a "fuel smell", so keep looking for the source of that. You might want to take the air filter apart and smell that. Sometimes reversion will put some fuel in the element and you can smell it. Hope this helps.

VOES is a Vacuum Operated Electrical Switch that is opend and closed by vacuum. What it does is change the timing depending on engine load, thereby minimizing detonation. Some people remove it thinking it is a "smog" item and really shouldn't.

It could also be a vent from the top of the gas tanks. I had a detriorated vent line that caused a fuel smell. It was replaced and re routed to the swingarm pivot and the smell went away.

Looking at the picture you provided, the hoses involved with the T fitting look like vacuum hoses and not fuel line. It also looks like one end of the T is capped so, I don't think what you are showing us is part of the problem unless one of those hoses is split or not connected to anything at the other end.

Your VOES should be right in that area. Also, if you're running an S&S, probably an S&S manifold that has a brass spigot on it that the VOES connects to.

I would think if that "T" was open that the tank valve would not open either, unless it has been modified. Pretty sure the valve on the 97 was vacuum operated originally.
