Default 97 EG Clutch Shell

Have been chasing a funny vibration for some time now. Did some things that helped it but kept thinking I was covering the vib up rather than fixing it. I have had the opportunity to ride a few bikes to compare. Specifically 2 97 and a 98. None had the Amount of vibration mine does between 1800 -2300 rpm. Doesn't matter weather I am accelerating or pull in the clutch at say 3000 rpm and coast down I get the vib either way. On some recommendations I tore the Compensator and the clutch shell apart. What I found was that the 6 rivets that hold the primary chain sprocket on the clutch basket are loose. I don't mean a little loose I mean LOOSE. (Least by my standards) I washed the basket off and can shake it (just right) and hear the rivets and sprocket rattle. Not to mention I can twist tings back and forth and see a good 20 -30 thousands movement. I have a clutch shell on the way but has anyone ran into this before? 2 local fellas just raised their eye brows and said never seen that before. Have a good 1 WP

Kinda of a bump. Any thoughts or ideas as to what might have caused this would be appreciated. Does anyone feel like this might could cause a vibration like what I have described? Thanks for your time folks WP

I can not find it now but there is a video on youtube of the exact condition you discribe. You been flogging the old girl pretty good ? Mine was all tight at 40K. Appears there are rivits on the outer starter ring gear and the sprocket. Your's like that. Put some pictures on here.

Have never had much luck getting pics on here Sorry. Yes there are rivets on the ring gear(for starter). They are tight, it's the ones that hold the 36t sprocket to the clutch shell that are loose. No I haven't rode it hard, that being said I bought the bike used, spring of last year. Have found a good many things that pointed to it being riden hard. In asking the question I was hopefull that someone might respond with Yea I have seen that and it caused a vibration ahh say certain RPM, load condition, clutch in or clutch out. Something along those lines. I have replaced the fairing brackets, frt mount, isolators along with a upgraded swingarm kit, had the top end apart fixing a blown rear head gasket. LOL It's been a story I tell ya. Thanks for the reply WP

Just an update Replacedhe clutch shell made a world of difference in the bike between 1800-2300 rpm were it had a bad vibration It's like riding a totally different bike. Would not have thought it would have made this much difference but certainly DID Have a good 1 WP

Ditto PanHeadRich ... factory manual dosent mention this at all .
Im a little surprised to see they used rivets on this particular application .
Would think spot welds etc. would have been better ?

This vibration has worn on me since I bought the bike. Had done every suggestion that I was given short of tearing into the motor. Was to that point or junk the bike. I had gotten a phone call into a fella on another forum. I'm known fairly well there and he called me. Pulling the primary all apart and ck everything was what he wanted me to do. Being at wits end I did. I have shown the shell to a few folks locally and none have seen this before. Least not without alot more tore up. I have similar post on 2 other forums and little to no replies. LOL Guess it is a rare thing to happen Have a good 1 WP

I have been since told bolts were used at one time rather than rivets I considered doing that except I wasn't able to find bolts the heads would provide enough clearance I'm gonna hang on to the old clutch basket for show and Tell LOL Have a good 1 WP

I hear you ., the clearance issue is probably why oem used the rivets .?

Still cant understand why instead of spot welds ? Probably the same old cost/production bullshit .
