Default Looking at another bike and need OPINIONS!!!!

Alright guys I have not been on for a while because I got rid of my 86 FLH. I am looking at trading a Ford Ranger even up for a 1990 FLHTC that is in rough shape. Dented gas tank and soft leather bags (the railing and brackets are all there to put the hard bags back on). Radio does not work and needs new exhaust. Looks like it has not been cleaned since new. Now the good. All new tires and brakes as well as new rotors. It seems to run great and drive great but the oil is thick on the bottom of the case (again like it has not been cleaned since new). No smoke when started up and only 37k on it. It seems pretty tight but cosmetically very ugly!!!! Windshield is beat up as well. No rust anywhere that I can find. I am looking at trading my 97 Ford Ranger that I have $2700 invested in. Its a great truck but I am thinking that the bike is worth more even in the state that its in. I have until Sunday to make a decision. Anybody have any thoughts? Looking for opinions good and bad I just need them fast.

Thanks in advance!!

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Update: I did not pull the trigger on the FLHTC. It was just to rough with too much work I think. If the outside looked that bad what does the inside look like? It seemed fine but just a bad feeling.

However I have another possibility with a 1994 Wide Glide with only 15k on it. Its in very good shape just pretty bare bones. I am thinking just go ahead a do it and try to trade it for an older Electra? I am wondering if there will be someone out there looking to downsize? The bike is pristine!!!! Do you guys have any thoughts on that? Is that a long shot to trade for a Dyna vs an Electra?

If you get rid of that truck, and need to replace it, let me know. My son bought a new car and his 95 Ford Ranger is just taking up space in my yard. He would sell it for $1,000.

Sounds like a pretty fair trade to me! I'd think you would be a little ahead of the game with the bike!

Ron750, I wish you were closer, I'd come take a look at that Ranger. Looks nice.

There is a real pretty 95 with similar mileage on ebay right now for about 5K and I think that's about all they (1990) are worth in todays market, max 6K.

So, It's going to cost you 2700 to get it and you have to ask yourself if you can make that thing real nice for less than 2-2.5K which will bring you up to what you could buy a ready to ride one. And...do you feel like doing all that work to save a few bucks.

I doubt it, finding used bags, getting them painted-(if it does not have the bags the street value drops way down)-, probably end up painting the whole bike, exhaust, windshield, why is there oil all over the engine, radio, probably other electrical stuff and who knows what else is wrong due to all the neglect. That all sounds like 2 grand to me and/or a ton of work.

I always buy used bikes and am not opposed to hard work but I start with a good base. Buying a project almost always leads to spending more than it is worth in the long run, especially with an older bike in todays depressed market.

Ds

Here is one that sold this month:

Thanks for the heads up. The only reason I was considering it was because of the little amount of cash I would have in it. Painting the whole thing $600 (a buddy does it for a living and is very good). I have seen several of his bikes and would trust him with mine. Hard bags are $300 locally (used of course). Exhaust is $75 for a complete set. Found several new take offs near my house. Oil is coming from a crankcase breather they installed and just never cleaned it is what it appears. $50 for a wind shield. I had an 86 that had nightmare issues with electrical and the only electrical issue this one has is the radio so it would get the Jenson HD $265. All the rest is my labor and that's how I get to know the bike anyway. Those are my thoughts or justifications. I love to wrench and I figure a little here and there this winter and she'll be ready for spring.

That sounds like a good trade. Do you have any pictures of the FLHTC that you could post? How about one of your Ranger?

On the topic of Rangers, here is one of my '95 XLT 4X4 with the 4.0 and a manual trans shot during a wheelin' trip to Rowher Flats, CA.

NADA in my area:

Good condition $2395
Fair condition $1120

KBB doesn't list anything but excellent condition...and their EX condition is 2 k lower than NADA

With $2700 in it in rough condition...you would be unlikely to fix it and break even when you sell...hope you are not getting it trying to turn a profit....Harley market sucks right now... 75-80% of the bikes listed on ebay don't sell at all...check the "completed listings"

Thank's for the tip. Didn't know e-bay provided that option.
